In the 13th Century sword design changed with the sword guard now turned down at the end and the blade has now developed into a sharp pointed elongated triangular shape.

The changes in design made for better handling characteristics as the lack of weight towards the tip allowed for free movement and the sharp point made it easier to thrust.

It is in this period that we see swords developing to such an extent that new techniques of sword combat are now possible.
